CUPERTINO, California, September 9, 2024 — Apple announced iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus with the A18 chip, a new Camera Control, the Action button and a 48-megapixel Fusion camera. The two models were built to support Apple Intelligence, whose first features were scheduled to begin arriving as a free software update the following month.

The launch connects a hardware generation with a phased software programme. According to Apple's product announcement, the phones were offered in 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch display sizes, with preorders beginning September 13 and availability beginning September 20.

A18 provides the local computing foundation

Apple said the A18 uses second-generation three-nanometre technology and includes an upgraded 16-core Neural Engine intended for large generative models. The six-core central processor was described as 30% faster than the A16 Bionic, while performing the same workload with 30% less power. The five-core graphics processor was described as up to 40% faster and 35% more efficient.

Those figures are Apple comparisons under its stated test conditions rather than independent measures of every workload. Real performance and battery use vary with applications, network activity, display settings, temperature and the mix of local and cloud processing.

Camera Control creates a new physical input

Camera Control adds a tactile surface on the side of the device for opening the camera and adjusting capture functions. Apple also positioned it as an entry point for visual intelligence, allowing future software to help users learn about objects and places viewed through the camera.

The camera system combines a 48MP Fusion sensor with an optical-quality 2x option, while the Ultra Wide camera adds autofocus and macro capability. Spatial photos and videos can be captured for viewing on Apple Vision Pro. Feature availability and results depend on software, subject, lighting and the receiving device.

Apple Intelligence was announced as a staged release

At launch, Apple said the first Apple Intelligence features would arrive in beta the following month through iOS 18.1 for supported devices configured for U.S. English in most regions. The initial set included writing assistance, notification and mail summaries, and changes to Siri's language handling and interaction design.

Additional functions, languages and markets were scheduled for later dates. The announcement therefore distinguishes hardware readiness from immediate feature availability. Customers should check current regional, language and device requirements rather than assume every described capability is active at purchase.

Privacy divides processing between device and cloud

Apple described its intelligence system as using on-device models where appropriate and Private Cloud Compute for larger requests. The design is intended to reduce unnecessary exposure of personal information while extending available compute. Security and privacy still depend on implementation, software updates, user choices and the applications allowed to access data.

The company also said external ChatGPT access would be available within selected experiences. That integration is separate from Apple's own models and may involve different terms, availability and data-handling choices presented to the user.

Design, availability and ownership costs

The phones use a revised internal layout intended to support a larger battery, improved heat dissipation and easier battery service. Apple cited its Ceramic Shield, water- and dust-resistant construction and long-term software support as durability elements. Resistance ratings are not permanent and can decline with wear.

Announced U.S. starting prices were $799 for iPhone 16 and $899 for iPhone 16 Plus. Accessories, storage choices, carrier service, repair and optional coverage affect total ownership cost. Buyers should compare the new controls and processing support with their existing device needs rather than treating generation alone as a reason to replace working hardware.
