CAPE CANAVERAL, April 28, 2025 — Amazon today confirmed that the first 27 production-design Project Kuiper satellites reached low Earth orbit aboard a United Launch Alliance Atlas V. The mission begins the operational deployment phase for Amazon's planned broadband constellation after two prototype satellites validated core systems in 2023.

The launch is the first step in building an authorised constellation of 3,236 satellites. Project Kuiper is intended to provide broadband to households, businesses and public organisations, particularly where terrestrial networks are limited. Commercial service was not available on launch day; the satellites must first complete commissioning and join a functioning network.

Twenty-seven production satellites start the deployment campaign

The Atlas V carried 27 satellites from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. Once separated, the spacecraft began controlled activation, communications checks and orbit raising. Amazon's mission teams will verify power, propulsion, networking and ground-system performance before treating the batch as operational capacity.

The mission differs from the two prototype satellites launched in 2023. Those spacecraft tested the architecture and informed changes to hardware, software and operating procedures. The April batch uses the production design that Amazon expects to manufacture and launch repeatedly.

What the mission must validate

  • safe separation and initial spacecraft activation;
  • solar power, propulsion and controlled orbit raising;
  • links among satellites, gateways and customer terminals;
  • fleet software, telemetry and collision-avoidance procedures;
  • repeatable integration for later launch batches.

A constellation is an industrial system

One successful launch does not create a broadband service. Amazon must manufacture satellites at a steady cadence, qualify each batch, integrate payloads with several rockets and operate an expanding fleet. Ground gateways, network software, user terminals, customer support and regulatory approvals must mature at the same time.

Project Kuiper has procured more than 80 launches from multiple providers. That portfolio reduces dependence on one rocket but increases the work of adapting dispensers, schedules and interfaces. Production and launch operations must exchange configuration records so that every spacecraft in orbit can be traced to its hardware and software baseline.

The authorised network contains 3,236 satellites

The full Federal Communications Commission authorisation covers 3,236 spacecraft in low Earth orbit. Operating closer to Earth can reduce communications delay compared with traditional geostationary satellites, but it also requires many moving spacecraft and continuous hand-offs. Coverage depends on the density and health of the deployed fleet.

Amazon must also manage orbital safety. Satellites need reliable manoeuvring, tracking and end-of-life disposal. Scaling the network therefore means scaling monitoring and decision systems as carefully as satellite production.

Customer terminals connect orbit to service

Users will experience Project Kuiper through terminals and network availability, not through the number of spacecraft alone. Antenna cost, installation, power use, weather performance and capacity allocation will shape adoption. Enterprise, government and remote-community users may require different equipment and service commitments.

Early production launches give Amazon real network data with which to refine those products. The company can test throughput, latency, hand-offs and gateway operations under conditions that prototypes alone cannot reproduce.

The first batch begins a long cadence

Project Kuiper represents a reported investment of more than $10 billion and a multi-year deployment challenge. The relevant near-term measures are successful commissioning, manufacturing yield, launch cadence and the number of regions supported by a stable service.

The 27 satellites are therefore both hardware and an operational test. Their performance will show whether Amazon's factories, launch partners and ground network can become one repeatable broadband system.
