LONDON and MONTRÉAL, June 25, 2026 — Rolls-Royce and Bombardier have launched enhanced aircraft and engine health monitoring for selected Global 5500 and Global 6500 business jets. The service joins Bombardier Smart Link Plus with the Engine Vibration & Health Monitoring Unit on the Rolls-Royce Pearl 15 engine.

The upgrade automatically transmits operating data in real time and can expose as many as 10,000 engine-health parameters. Its practical purpose is to identify developing problems earlier, support predictive maintenance and keep an aircraft available rather than waiting for a fault to become a disruption.

Two data systems become one service

Rolls-Royce's announcement combines the aircraft-level connection supplied by Smart Link Plus with its own EVHMU engine monitoring. The result is an end-to-end channel from sensors on the aircraft to analytics and support teams.

This is not a replacement for inspections or licensed engineering judgement. It gives maintainers a broader and faster evidence set so that they can decide what to inspect, which component may need attention and whether work should be scheduled before the next mission.

Availability is the commercial measure

Business aircraft often operate around changing schedules and time-sensitive trips. An unexpected maintenance event can therefore cost more than the repair itself: it can require substitute lift, crew changes and a revised itinerary. Earlier condition evidence gives an operator more opportunity to place work inside a planned stop.

Rolls-Royce and Bombardier describe higher availability and controlled maintenance cost as intended benefits. Those remain outcomes to measure, not guarantees. Useful evidence will include fewer avoidable removals, shorter diagnosis time, accuracy of alerts and the share of interventions completed without disturbing a planned flight.

The service has eligibility boundaries

The launch applies to selected Global 5500 and Global 6500 aircraft, not every jet in the fleets. Activation requires Smart Link Plus and Rolls-Royce CorporateCare Enhanced service contracts, together with the relevant EVHMU software or hardware update.

Eligible customers can book installation through Bombardier service centres worldwide. Both capabilities are also factory-fit on newly produced aircraft. That distinction matters because retrofit timing, aircraft configuration and contract coverage determine when an operator can use the service.

Monitoring turns maintenance into a continuous process

Traditional maintenance combines fixed intervals, crew reports and inspection findings. Continuous health data adds another layer: trends in vibration and performance can be compared across time, allowing a weak signal to be reviewed before it becomes an obvious fault.

The volume of data alone is not the product. The service must filter normal variation, preserve signal quality and route a meaningful finding to the right support team. Excessive false alarms would consume engineering time; a missed deterioration would undermine confidence. Governance therefore includes sensor validation, alert thresholds and traceable decisions.

Digital tools remain subordinate to aviation controls

The Economist Enterprise profile describes Rolls-Royce's broader practice of testing digital and AI tools against explicit value hypotheses before scaling them. In safety-critical work, models support engineers rather than silently authorising maintenance outcomes.

The new monitoring programme fits that operating philosophy. Cloud analytics, smart algorithms and bidirectional communication can accelerate diagnosis, while approved procedures, airworthiness requirements and human review continue to govern action on the aircraft.

A joint product also needs joint accountability

Bombardier supplies the aircraft and service-centre relationship; Rolls-Royce supplies the Pearl 15 engine, monitoring hardware and engine analytics. Operators should know which party owns each alert, response and data-quality issue, especially when a recommendation crosses the boundary between airframe and propulsion.

If that handoff works, the programme can make support less reactive. Its strongest claim will not be the number of parameters collected, but whether the right maintenance task is identified early enough to protect aircraft availability without creating unnecessary work.
