When Clea Shearer and Joanna Taplin co-founded Home Edit in 2015, they had a simple mission: to improve customers’ lives by decluttering and organizing their spaces. In the years since, their brand has grown far beyond that: a full lifestyle brand, a Netflix TV show (two seasons and multiple seasons), multiple product lines, and most recently, a podcast called Energy’s best friend.

Perhaps the most unexpected element of their brand, especially since being bought by Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine, is that fans of home editing need Clea and Joanna more—sure, they love organized content, but they also love the women in charge. They love producing that content as much.

For the latest installment of In The Know’s pop culture interview series, We have to talkClea and Joanna talk about their new podcast, Home Edit’s unbreakable bond with celebrities, how Hello Sunshine has impacted their business, and much more.

Clea Shearer on fighting cancer:

It was truly humbling to share my story. This was the honor of my life. It is truly going to shape and change the way I live my life forever. The support from all my online friends, my real friends, the community around me has been truly incredible. I wouldn’t recommend it to anybody—I wouldn’t try to be like, “Go out there and see what it’s like!” But it really was a very special time with many silver linings.

Joanna Taplin on watching Kelia’s very unsuccessful battle with cancer:

It has been beyond incredible [to watch]. I am in complete awe of Clea daily. It never ceases to amaze me. Honestly. She’s a pillar of strength, but she’s also very honest, very real, very authentic with what she’s going through, and it’s pure bravery and selflessness that she shares her story with. This is just incredible!

In their new podcast, Energy’s best friend:

Joanna Taplin: The only spirit we have is to be who we are and to walk the path where we end up.

Kelia Shearer: We are going down a rabbit hole and people are going down the rabbit hole with us. We want to feel like we’re all a community of friends and everyone is listening to each other. You may be in on the joke or new to the joke, but we all laugh together.
