Most famous celebrities from York revealed in new interactive map
A new interactive map has revealed the most famous person from York, but the result may surprise you!
Mapbox researcher and geographer Topi Tjukanov created an enlightening map showing the birthplaces of the most prominent people around the world.
These data are based on a study published in June this year by researchers at the University of Paris.
A person’s importance was calculated based on information scraped from Wikipedia and Wikidata.
Did you know that Freddie Mercury was born in Zanzibar and Barack Obama was born in Honolulu? Who is the most famous person in your city?
I made a map of the most prominent people around the world. Made with @Mapbox.

The data includes a range of factors including the number of Wikipedia entries, their average length, the average number of hits from 2018-2015, as well as the total number of external links.
Mr Tjukanov explained to users on Twitter: “The data contains a rank value and a significant ‘aggregate value’ which is used to determine which names are shown and how big they are.”
You can explore the map and see notable people from hometowns around the world in four different categories:
- Discovery and science
- Sports games
Who is the most prominent person in York?
York has many famous people, including acting royalty, Judi Dench.
The actor has starred in a number of acclaimed films and TV shows as well as being a star on stage.
Dame Judy is best known for playing the role of M in the James Bond series opposite Daniel Craig.
The actor grew up in Heworth and later attended Mount School, an independent Quaker secondary school, where he found his love for the performing arts.
Along with the big names, there are a few that you might not recognize if you’re not a sports fan.
As Paul Gibb’s name appeared on the map, the English cricketer was born in Acomb, where he found his passion for cricket.
He later played first-class cricket for Cambridge University and also became a Royal Air Force pilot during World War II.
York has a host of famous faces, although not all of them are shown on the map, including actor Mark Addy.
Born in Tonghall, the star has appeared in some of the biggest shows and movies of recent history.
including the hit show Game of Thrones, the cult classic The Full Monty and the lead role in the sitcom Still Standing.
Another name missing from the map is the York-born and educated historical figure Guy Fawkes.
Fox, of course, is best known for his role in the failed gunpowder plot on the Houses of Parliament, which we now identify as the night of the fire, November 5.
Now go to the map and see if you recognize any notable names.
