Masaba Gupta acts for fun, not to impress production houses or attract 1000 crore money grabbers. The famous fashion designer, who made her acting debut with ‘Masaba Masaba’ in 2020, said she has a long way to go as an actress but is currently enjoying the process.

“I’m not a young woman in my 20s who wants to impress five production houses or directors and make a Rs 600-1000 crore film. I’m just having fun and I’m not doing this to prove anything to anyone. My credit is how much “I’m good as an actor, it doesn’t change much day to day for me. But it’s a privilege to be in front of the camera myself and I’m just happy. I’ve only scratched the surface.” Gupta told PTI in a Zoom interview.

He is back with the second season of the series, which is currently streaming on Netflix.

‘Masaba Masaba 2’ comes months after the actress-designer won acclaim for her portrayal of Saiba, a woman deep in dating shows, in Prime Video’s ‘Modern Love Mumbai’.

Masaba Gupta, who runs her fashion brand House of Masaba, said working on the semi-fictional Netflix series gave her closure on issues she was facing in her personal life.

A big part of filming the first season of “Masaba Masba” was like therapy for me. There were a lot of issues that I struggled with that I ended up with through scenes, workshops and just on set. A very meditative experience,” the 32-year-old added.

Describing ‘Masaba Masaba’ as part reality show and part feel-good fiction, Masaba Gupta said that while the first season focused on her and her mother, veteran actress Neena Gupta, the second season will expand their world by welcoming the characters expands differently.

The new season sees the mother-daughter duo forge new paths in their careers as they deal with love, attraction, grief, insecurities and competition.

Neil Bhopalam and Ritasha Rathore reprise their roles as Dhiriya Rana, the investor of Masaba’s house, and Jaya, Masaba’s entrepreneur and best friend. Kusha Kapila, Karima Barry, Barkha Singh, Ram Kapoor and Armaan Khera are the new actors of this series.

“Each episode is like a love letter to a girl, boy, man or woman who may have an unresolved problem that they may have forgotten 10 years ago. This series is no longer a slice of my life and my mother’s life,” added Masaba Gupta. This is a slice of every person’s life that you may know at some point.

According to the Mumbai-based actor-designer, people always like to watch something that makes them feel good. “That’s what the show is about. It’s a really beautiful dress that you want to wear on your worst day and you’ll feel better,” she said.

Like the first season of “Masaba Masaba” the song “Auntie Kisco Bola Bi?” The second season features Nina Gupta calling out ageism, “I’m Your King,” a soulful funky rap song with Masaba Gupta.

“I’m Your King” is an obvious homage to American pop star Beyoncé’s beautiful, larger-than-life music videos championing the power of women. Composed by Samesh Saha and Bangalore-based rapper Irfna, the song allowed the actress to live her long-held ‘pop star dream’.

“My dream was to be like Jennifer Lopez and Beyoncé. I had a lot of fun rapping. I’m someone who really enjoys dancing, I wish I could do a little bit more of that. That’s the whole vibe of the song. Masaba Gupta said that women are born queens, but you can also be kings.

The second season of “Masaba Masba” is directed by Sonam Nair and presented by Ashwini Yardi from Vinyar Films.
