Gucci Westman’s Guide to Summer Bridal Beauty 2022

If you’re a beauty enthusiast, chances are you’re already familiar with the work of Atelier Westman founder and makeup legend Gucci Westman, who has powdered the faces of celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, Anne Hathaway, and Emily Ratajkowski. In a new twist for her namesake brand, the artist has launched Westman Brides, an online destination that features step-by-step tutorials on how to achieve three Westman wedding-inspired looks: The Classic Bride, The Romantic Bride and mother of the bride.

“A lot of brides are looking to really empower themselves and really empower themselves, as opposed to a transformational concept, and that’s what Westman Brides is all about,” says Westman. “It’s very intuitive if you want to play with makeup – the destination gives you a lot of confidence because these products are so easy to use on your own.”

Each beauty look includes an accompanying how-to video that shows Westman creating a look from start to finish, along with a list of the exact Atelier Westman products she uses and additional tips for items. The artist notes that these tutorials aren’t meant to be intimidating, but rather as an easy way to build up the experience of applying bride-to-be makeup while adding a little fun to the process.

“It’s not like you have to take 500 steps and transform your look; maybe you can create this beautiful coverage on your skin, and you’ll be surprised at how easy it is,” she continues. “And then, if you have a stylist, you can have a little more experience with what you want from the stylist.”

To get you all about bridal beauty this season—from how to keep your makeup looking on hot summer days (and nights) to relentlessly preparing for makeup trials—Westman shares some of her hottest pro tips below.

What are some of the key components that make up bridal makeup?

I think it really focuses on the face. You want your skin to look like it’s the healthiest you’ve ever been, the most radiant—in the right way—you’ve ever been, and your features somehow defined. So it’s really a combination of all these facial products: foundation, contour and then different cheek colors depending on your skin tone.

Of course, it’s humid in the summer months, so it’s important to have the right glow—especially for photos—and not look too shiny. It’s also nice to do a more golden color with something fresh on the lips. And I’m really happy that we launched our powder just in time for the wedding season. When it comes time for your actual wedding photos, I definitely recommend carrying a small touch-up kit to freshen up.

In your expert opinion, is it forbidden to use bold lips for brides in wedding ceremonies?

Definitely not! In my opinion, the most special and beautiful part of being a bride is that there are no rules. It really all comes down to you as a person and what suits you best. If it’s okay for me to wear black lipstick to my event and I feel the most beautiful, then that’s what I’m going to wear.

I couldn’t agree more with you on this. In terms of makeup trials, do you have any advice for brides-to-be to prepare for ahead of time?

I know a lot of brides are interested in having treatments before their trial and wedding, like a facial or something, which is totally fine. I would just recommend focusing on treatments where there is no excessive pressure, aggressive products, and no downtime required. I think a gentle exfoliation the night before trying on makeup is good to make your skin look more naturally radiant.

You’ll also want to make sure to communicate with the stylist if you have any sensitivities about the products, and then it’s always great to show a few reference pictures as well. Finally, it’s important to explain under what circumstances you’re getting married—if it’s on the beach, at night, whatever.

If a bride plans to do her makeup for a shower or rehearsal dinner, what products should be considered for successful beauty?

It really depends on what you want to look like, but I think keeping things simple is always really stylish. If you’re someone who normally wants to play up your eyes, maybe go more classic. Or maybe focus on the skin as glorious as possible and add color to the lips for example.

It’s all about you as the bride, and it’s fun to experience something that might be a little different than what you looked like on your wedding day.

Do you recommend making wedding makeup different from the wedding ceremony? Why and why not?

From the ceremony to the reception, I don’t necessarily change my look too much, just touch it up – instead I focus on transforming your outfit. Ideally, a bride will feel the most beautiful she’s ever felt, and you kind of want to enhance that and not drastically change anything.

Are there any common mistakes you’ve seen in your experience with wedding dresses?

Perhaps the most common mistake is to go overboard and go a little heavy-handed because you think that’s what you have to do. I also think you should pay attention to tan lines if your outfit is revealing.

Is there a final makeup tip for brides-to-be?

If you want to use our products and think you are going to cry, you might choose a waterproof mascara. Also, especially for our Eye Pods, you can always add a little translucent powder at the end to make the formula last longer. But Atelier Westman is really a beautiful brand, especially for brides. It’s all about enhancing what you have and creating the best version of yourself, which I think is kind of like being a bride in a nutshell.
